Quick Thoughts:
After 11 straight 50-win seasons and an NBA championship, Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks had seemingly fallen back into mediocrity in 2013. Dirk had his worst season in over a decade and Dallas was back in the lottery for the first time since 2000. Last year, behind a bounce-back season from Nowitzki, the Mavericks won 49 games, squeaking back into the post-season before pushing the eventual champs to seven games. As with most superstars, Dirk's performance has been strongly correlated to the Mavs' success:

After some head-scratching moves this offseason, Nowitzki will again need to be brilliant to lead Dallas back into the playoffs.
Player to Watch: Brandan Wright
Wright has been extremely productive since coming to the Mavericks three years ago, producing 12.8 win shares in only 3000 minutes. While his per minute production may not translate with starters minutes, Wright should see an increased role in Dallas this season, projecting as the third big behind Nowtizki and Tyson Chandler. He is a great fit offensively with Nowitzki because he operates almost exclusively inside. More than 90% of his shot attempts were in the paint, and Wright had the highest field goal percentage in the entire league on shots within the restricted area (minimum 100 attempts). When he and Dirk shared the court, the Mavs had an offensive rating that would have led the league, according to NBA.com. While he may be an awkward fit next to Chandler, expect Wright to see a career high in minutes this season.
