Quick Thoughts:
Last season Charlotte had a top ten defense with Josh McRoberts and Al Jefferson in their starting froncourt. They did this by committing the fewest number of fouls and giving up the fewest number of offensive rebounds in the NBA. They also allowed the fewest number of transition points, choosing to abandon their own second chance opportunities to prevent fastbreak scores. These were deliberate tactical decisions designed to make up for the lack of individual defensive talent. Can they sustain this while simultaneously improving their offense? I'm skeptical.

Player to Watch: Bismack Biyombo
The Hornets have a potentially elite rim protector sitting on their bench. Biyombo's block percentage last season was 6.3%, behind only Anthony Davis and Serge Ibaka among qualified players, and his rebound rate was in the top ten. Using NBA.com's player tracking data, we can calculate that Biyombo contested 53% of opponents shots at the rim last year, and of the shots he contested, opponents only made 39% of them. According to Seth Partnow's research at Nylon Calculus, Biyombo saved approximately nine points per 36 minutes with his shot contesting, more than four points above average and third best among big men. Offensively, he was barely used, but had a field goal percentage over 60%, mostly on shots in the restricted area. Unfortunately, Biyombo sits fifth in the big man depth chart and won't see a real opportunity to build off his success unless an injury occurs.
